Egress is an email encryption tool that integrates with Microsoft Outlook to protect sensitive information. The Egress platform continuously assesses human risk and dynamically adapts policy controls to defend against advanced phishing attacks and outbound data breaches.
2. Why should I have/use it?
It is essential all staff have it and use it. If you send any sensitive information (financial, confidential or personal) you must encrypt these emails which is achieved by using the egress functionality within outlook.
Egress also offers functionality to send large files (over standard 30MB outlook limit).
Egress also protects you and Cobalt from phishing attacks and it incorporates banner and warnings both in email you draft and issues as well as receive. It is essential you take heed of this prompts and raise with Digital any high risk emails you receive.
- How to Check if You Have Egress in Outlook
Follow these steps to check if you have Egress enabled in your Outlook:
Step 1: Open Microsoft Outlook
- Launch Microsoft Outlook on your computer.
b. Sign in with your work or personal account if required.
Step 2: Check for the Egress Add-In
a. Click on "New Email" (top left of screen) to open a new message window.

b. Look at the toolbar (ribbon) at the top of the email window.
c. If you have Egress installed, you should see:
A panel called Egress with Egress icons (which will include a lock, paperclip and shield)

Note if your outlook is maximised you will see an
icon
d. If you see this option, Egress is installed and available for use.
If You Don’t See Egress then continue as follows
Step 3: Check Outlook Add-Ins
If you don’t see the Egress button, you can manually check for the add-in:
- In Outlook, go to the "File" menu in the top-left corner.
b .Select "Options" from the menu (bottom left of screen)
c. In the Outlook Options window, click on "Add-ins" in the left-hand panel
Look for "Egress" under Active Application Add-ins section:
- If Egress appears here, it is installed but
may not be visible in the toolbar
- If it appears under Inactive or Disabled Add-ins,
you may need to enable it.
Step 4: Enable Egress (If Disabled)
- In the same Add-ins window, find the Manage dropdown at the bottom.
- Select "COM Add-ins" and click "Go...".
- Locate Egress in the list and check the box next to it.
- Click OK, then restart Outlook.
